Do you ever wish there was a guide to make life at home easier? The good news is that for the millions of individuals living with Alzheimer’s and dementia – there is! This summer, the Alzheimer's Foundation of America (AFA) created and released a booklet and video called ‘The Apartment’ which showcases how carefully selected designs coupled with technological innovations can improve the quality of life and safety for adults with cognitive impairments.
Better yet… ‘The Apartment’ is a REAL studio residence model in New York City built at AFA’s headquarters! According to Next Avenue, this “space serves as a roadmap for creating the safest possible home for a loved one” and exemplifies how “even small changes can make a difference in someone's quality of life.”
We encourage you to explore ‘The Apartment’ on AFA’s website; you can take a virtual tour and even download a room-by-room guide!
Overall features include:
* Color schemes & contrast – to promote relaxation and support depth perception and spatial orientation
* Lighting selections – to reduce glare and agitation as well as reduce falls
* Reminiscent decorations – to aid with mood, comfort and memory recall
* Technology across contexts – from medication reminders to caregiver communication to smart home safety features
So what did you think? Did you get a chance to view ‘The Apartment’? Are any of the features so clever and comforting that they could benefit you or someone you know even without dementia?
We think these concepts are a great foundation in illustrating how our homes can truly be personalized to meet our needs, and we are so glad this awareness is apparent for those living with dementia and Alzheimer’s.
