Monday Market Update: 5 Facts About Women Homebuyers

5 facts about women & homes past, present & future!

March is Women’s History Month, and new data has been released that shows how women are making history in housing today! Ever since 1981, the National Association of Realtors (NAR)® started releasing the Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers and one finding has been consistent: single women have outpaced single men in terms of homeownership every year since then.

Here are 5 more facts about women & housing that just might surprise you, inspire you or both!

#1: Women could not legally obtain a mortgage without a cosigner until 1974.

#2: In the first NAR® Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers Report in 1981, 11% of home buyers were single women and 10% were single men (73% were married couples).

#3: According to the most recent NAR® Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers Report today, 20% of home buyers are single women, 8% are single men (63% are married couples).

#4: Women still have lower household incomes then men – yet are surpassing all odds as their home ownership rates continue to rise despite an increasingly unaffordable market.

#5: Among first-time buyers, 24% are single women while 11% are single men and 50% are married couples.

BONUS Fact: Among single women buyers, 16% have children under 18 living in the home and 14% cite having a multi-generational home (these rates are both higher for single women than men).
