Too often people think that falling is an inevitable part of aging – but it does not (and should not!) have to be that way. One of the biggest risks of older adults falling is a hip fracture. More than just a ‘simple’ broken bone, hip fractures are often associated with prolonged impaired mobility, the need for inpatient rehabilitation and even increased risk of fatality.
According to the CDC, 300,000 Americans fracture their hips each year. 1 in 5 of those individuals will die within 12 months. That is why preventing falls is so critical in the first place.
Just last week, AARP published ‘7 Ways to Prevent Hip Injuries.’ We have compiled them in a list below, but highly encourage you to read the article in full here. Please also be sure to chat with your doctor about the best ways for you to manage your own health and your own risk factors for fall prevention and improved mobility with age.

Personal perspective: I would also like to add that if you are experiencing hip pain (or any health concern) that is worsening and not improving, keep advocating for your health. There are times when joint pain can be associated with other underlying and very serious health conditions and should NOT be overlooked. Debilitating pain is not a ‘normal’ part of aging and should be taken seriously.
