Senior Spotlight: Hobbies Help Achieve A High Quality of Life

…and help keep you healthier too!

Free time. Most of us have waited many, many years for the days when we could choose what we wanted to do, rather than live by what we needed to do. When our days are no longer filled with working or raising families, it leaves a lot more time for other things – like hobbies! The focus of our Senior Spotlight today is to provide ideas for leisure and livelihood that help you feel good, both mentally & physically.

Hobbies are more than a way to spend time, they can support psychological and physical well-being. Research has shown that “people who frequently engage in hobbies they love tend to live longer and experience less severe disease and illness.” In addition, hobbies enjoyed with others increase the mental health benefits of less depression and anxiety and even reduce the risk of cognitive decline and dementia!

Here are three great resources for exploring hobbies (we bet you have never heard of some of these!).

Notable, unique ideas: joining a community group or board, studying languages, bird watching and making models.

The Best Hobbies for Seniors To Do at Home | Elder Care Alliance

There are times when poor weather, reduced mobility or simply personal preference dictate that the best hobbies are those that can be done from the comforts of home. There is a list for that too – so please don’t assume that the same 4 walls mean you have to do the same old thing every day! Notable, unique ideas: origami & paper sculpting, chair yoga, brain games, audiobook clubs and even virtual volunteering!

We hope that this article inspires you to try at least one new thing in 2025! Fresh interests can often give a fresh and positive perspective (and that is never a bad thing!).

Cheers to health, happiness and the hobbies that take you there!
