Monday Market Update: Does Your Preparedness Plan Include Pets?

It’s National Preparedness Month & an ideal time to ensure every family member is covered.

September is flying by, and just a few weeks ago we shared that the theme of National Preparedness Month 2023 highlights the needs of older adults. Yet it is equally important that every member of our family is ready for anything… including your four-legged family members!

The latest data shows that nearly 70% of US households have a pet, so we have included a list from Ready.gov on how to make an emergency kit for your furry and never forgotten loved one.

The Red Cross reiterates that in the event of an emergency “your pets will be even more dependent on you for their safety and well-being.” They are essentially the only ones in your home that you cannot prepare mentally or physically for a drill with any deeper contextual understanding (though a practice evacuation never hurts!). Be sure to save this link from the American Red Cross to find links to the Pet First Aid App, how to make a first aid kit for your pet, access a pets and disaster safety checklist & more.

No matter who is in your family and how you have chosen to acknowledge this important awareness month, please do at least 3 simple things to prepare! At a minimum, sign-up for your community’s emergency alerts, change the batteries in your smoke detectors and update your supply kits with unexpired food and plenty of water.

Let’s be ready for anything… and hopefully never have to rely on it! 😉
