Happy Thanksgiving week! This is a time that will bring many of us together with loved ones in the hub of the home: the kitchen! We want to keep your distractions minimal to maximize your time for gratitude, so this week we are sharing 3 quick but valuable ‘no thank yous’ when updating a kitchen, courtesy of Realtor.com. The quick tips below came from the new HGTV series – “Flipping Showdown.” Read more in the original article here.
What NOT To Do When Updating Your Kitchen
#1: Just say ‘no thank you’ to awkward islands. A misplaced island or one squeezed into a small space is worse than no island at all. You can still have an amazing kitchen sans island, via a functional peninsula, rolling kitchen cart or other creative layout!
#2: Just say ‘no thank you’ to skimping on lighting. Great lighting can make or break a kitchen. Not only is lighting placement and amount important, but fixture style plays a critical role in grounding the overall design and feel. (In other words: no cheap track lights!)
#3: Just say ‘no thank you’ to short cuts in prep. Cutting corners is tempting, especially if it saves money and time. But the hosts of “Flipping Showdown” give an example of gluing a backsplash versus using a backer board, and then ending up with a burnt orange color from the setting material bleeding through. Other shortcuts to avoid include: not matching drywall textures or not priming before you paint or only using one coat.
No matter how much time you spend in your kitchen this week, we hope that your heart is fuller than your plate! Enjoy every moment with every person who is most precious to you. We know we will!
