Senior Spotlight: Solo City Travel

Beaches aren’t for everyone.

2024: The year of the solo traveler. According to Forbes and many other publications, one of the biggest post-pandemic travel trends has been the rise of solo traveling. Tour company Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT) and Solo Traveler magazine report that 68% of those surveyed identify themselves as solo travelers. 50% of OAT clients are solo travelers, while Solo Traveler World states that solo travel growth is occurring in double digits. Google searches for solo travel have quadrupled since April 2020, with Google data also revealing that solo travel has grown over 761% from 2020 to mid-2021.

A recent read from Next Avenue dialed in on a unique demographic and location – solo travelers who are older adults and not beach-goers! Believe it or not, not everyone wants to hit the beach. And let's be honest - as we age - spending lots of time in the sun walking on uneven sand while vying for lounge chairs can become less appealing. The rewards of traveling alone to city destinations are often overlooked – here is a summary of the advantages!

Traveling without a plus-one to a more populated place means you don’t have to be alone if you don’t want to be. Solo travel allows flexibility in how you spend your time, where and with who. Shopping, dining, taking tips from hotel concierges and participating in tourist stops is a great way to build experiences and friendships. Many solo travelers report getting more of the ‘local flavor’ as you engage more with community members; it’s easier to gain an immersive and objective experience.

Next Avenue shares that the top cities for city slicker, solo travelers are: New Orleans, Las Vegas, Boston, and NYC. From historic landmarks to stunning shows and cultural experiences, these cities offer an array of activities to pick and choose from, in settings where you can be as sociable as you want to be. Get all the details HERE.

Traveling alone does not have to mean isolation, and vacation does not have to mean beach. Wherever you go, whatever you do – seek what makes you happy, on your terms. Isn’t that what retirement is all about?

Happy planning,
