The perfect storm is brewing amidst the challenging combination of a nationwide labor shortage and a growing older population. But a recent study from the Express Employment Professionals staffing agency and the Harris Poll indicate that a win-win may be within reach.
The poll revealed that 79% of workers aged 57 to 79 years old would rather be semi-retired than leave the workforce completely. Two-thirds expressed concerns about having enough savings to support a full retirement; 8 out of 10 said they would like a flexible work schedule, 59% would be willing to work reduced hours with reduced benefits and over 66% would like to transition to a consulting role.
While the pandemic has launched a type of remote/flexible work revolution, only 21% of surveyed workers said that their employers offered semi-retirement options as of now.
However, Bill Stoller, CEO of Express Employment Professionals believes this will have to change given low birth rates and an already gaping labor shortage. He goes so far as to state that enabling workers to retire on their own terms is a ‘necessity.’
Stoller states: “This is an issue that may not be solved for many generations, so companies must use all the available tools at their discretion to build the labor force of the future that is substantial and competent.”
How do you feel about a semi-retirement option? Would you stay in the workforce longer if you could have a flexible, part-time schedule? What would your ideal semi-retirement look like?
