August is just about here, and the July headlines have brought some insightful and introspective articles. As the Bobbi Decker team scoured the news and decided what to share, we landed on 3 publications that we think will appeal to our readers. See below to learn about an Olympic reporter who is ‘having too much fun to retire’, 8 emerging ravel destinations for Baby Boomers with budget in mind, plus what a retirement wave means for younger workers.
Andrea Joyce Is Having Too Much Fun to Retire
Next Avenue shares a revelation that most of us know but few talk about: women do not have the luxury to age on tv. Sportscaster Andrea Joyce, now covering diving in the summer Olympics in Paris, shares how she ended up breaking the rules, who helped her along the way and how she’s banded with other women in news for 30 years to lift each other up the ladder. This is a fun read on what happens when you do what you love and set a few new standards along the way.
“I walk into every assignment with a great attitude. I'm really happy to be there and I am excited to see what might unfold. It's not drudgery for me. It's not a grind. It's never old. It's never felt like work. So I think that's a lot of it — and a lot of it is not trying to reach for other stuff all the time.” ~ Andrea Joyce
8 Emerging Travel Destinations for Boomers on Budgets
Summer does not mean the end of vacations, and retirees especially can take trips any time of year! Yahoo! Finance recently wrote about 8 great places to visit that won’t break the bank. If travel is something you love to do but inflation is getting in the way, think about changing your itinerary instead of changing your retirement dreams. This read suggests road trips to Oklahoma, Arkansas and Mississippi for natural attractions historical sites with lower gas prices and fewer crowds. Other destinations that can be done affordably are Italy ($1,900 per person per week), Mexico ($850 per person per week), Hawaii (search carefully for affordable accommodations), Charleston, South Carolina (stay right outside the city for $100 per night or less) and Mackinac Island, Michigan (no cars, lots of beachside breezes for less than $300 per night).
Baby Boomer Retirement Wave Means More Job Opportunities for Younger Americans
Is the silver tsunami finally going to hit? ABC 7 reiterates that 4 million Americans are turning 65 every year for the next four years; this is a jump of 11,200 Americans turning 65 every day now through 2027 vs. 10,000 a day for the last decade. With more people exiting the workforce than entering, those on the job hunt have many options. Industries being hit hardest by older workers retiring are healthcare, government and education. One really interesting insight is the biggest share of workers under age 40 are in retail and hospitality; could job skills utilized in these fields translate to success in the most in-demand fields? If the desire is there – absolutely!
Have you seen any of these topics in the news yet? Are you inspired by women in sports and sports coverage? Excited to plan a fall excursion? Thinking about your own retirement timeline? We hope these articles provided some new knowledge or at least a fresh perspective!
