Senior Spotlight: Taking Travel To The Next Level

Pair it with a hobby!

As we look towards retirement, many of us have two things on our minds – going to places we love and taking time to do the things we love. A new read from AARP suggests that while both travel and hobbies are powerful health and happiness drivers in and of themselves, combining them literally creates the best of both worlds.

AARP’s Global Council on Brain Health has previously reported that you can boost your brain health by challenging yourself, adopting new habits and behaviors and doing things that are enjoyable. So why not take up a new hobby… and take it around the world with you! Here are a few examples of how based on ‘4 Hobbies to Make a Vacation More Meaningful.’

- Imagine knitting under the Northern Lights. Did you know that knitting designer Hélène Magnússon offers various tours where you can learn about Icelandic knitting and do so at the top of a mountain or with a view of the Northern Lights? Knitting is one hobby that is lightweight, easy to pack, and can be done on the plane plus wherever you roam!

- Eating is one of the best parts of travel – but what if you coupled it with preparing the food yourself? Kitchen enthusiasts may wish to pursue travel where cooking classes are the heart (or at least part!) of the journey. One amazing option is the Mardi Gras School of Cooking, where one can master ‘The Holy Trinity’ of Louisiana cooking and take their creole and cajun flavors to the next level.

- Garden lovers take note… you can appreciate plants just about anywhere and even plan trips that are botany-based. What if the first stop on your plant-based adventures was The New York Botanical Garden, home to 250 acres and over one million living plants?!

- If you love to be on the water, consider taking up kayaking and planning travel to a certain number of perfect paddling places. AARP puts Lake Tahoe at the top of the list; you can even go beyond boating basics into LED night tours! There are even options and accommodations for those who need greater accessibility, making this a possibility for many abilities.

These are not the only hobbies that you can use as a foundation for travel. What if you planned a trip based on the best golf courses? The most expansive fields of wildflowers? The best bird watching? We all know what they say about two birds and one stone… so why not appreciate two passions at the same time.

What hobby and travel pairing would you pick to do in 2024?! Please feel free to share!
