In honor of National Preparedness Month, we wanted to share some resources dedicated to helping older adults prepare for anything and everything, as much as you can these days!
Some of the unique considerations for seniors include:
| Accessibility to information (are they signed-up for text alerts or county notification phone calls?)
| Additional planning with regards to medications, medical equipment and/or assistive devices (and being able to power them as needed)
| Extra time needed to pack and evacuate
| Contingency planning if one needed to stay home alone in a post-disaster environment for 2 weeks (and had been accustomed to caregiver and family support)
One set of often-forgotten preparedness steps for older adults is listed on this simple graphic from Ready.gov.
Some other recommended resources include:
Disaster and Emergency Preparedness for Older Adults: American Red Cross
Personal Disaster Preparedness: For Individuals With Disabilities
Disaster Preparedness For Seniors By Seniors: American Red Cross
Emergency Preparedness for Older Adults, including COVID-19: CDC
Disaster Preparedness: California Department of Aging (Select Resources & Tools)
While preparing for an emergency in full could never be covered in one blog, our one message this week is that preparedness is different for different lifestyles.
Please consider the unique circumstances of the older adults in your life and help them take at least one small step that could mean a HUGE difference in evacuating, avoiding missed medications or having to do without critical medical equipment. Also be sure to consult with your loved one’s medical team for their concerns and considerations as to how their health and medical needs could best be supported in the event of a fire, earthquake, flood or other natural disaster.
