Those who are aged 50 and older are among the generations that can actually remember when working from home was not even in existence. The first 2-3 decades of their working lives were likely spent commuting to their jobs. In the 90’s and 2000’s work from home became a possibility but for many was still not the norm. Enter the 2020 pandemic and now many Silicon Valley companies are extending full-time remote work through not only the end of the year, but halfway into 2021 and likely not all bringing all employees back into the building full-time even then. So what do employees age 50+ think of working from home in entirety? In short, they love it!
AARP shared the results of a survey by Work At Home Vintage Experts earlier this year. As a company that specializes in placing contract workers over the age of 50, they polled 250+ users in May to gain their feedback on the overnight requirement to work from home. Here is what they said:
| 81.6% of respondents were not apprehensive about working from home
| 92% said the biggest benefit was no longer having a commute
| 97% indicated that a strong work ethic is very important for remote work success
| 60%+ stated that the best benefit of working from home was more family time
While many older adults surveyed indicated they originally worried about missing the work environment and missing their peers, or shared concerns about motivation, most found the transition to be easier and more worthwhile than expected!
