As we are writing this blog it’s raining outside and we hope that all of our readers find themselves warm, dry and healthy. As we welcome the last month of the year, it seems like a good time for reflection, and we found 3 reads in which real life individuals have done just that.
The three articles below are a unique conglomeration of seniors sharing their experiences. In one read from Next Avenue, a couple from Buffalo, NY shares what it was like to test their time as snowbirds in Florida. Another read from The Washington Post reveals several stories of seniors targeted by scammers and what they did to identify the scheme and protect themselves. The last one is a riveting read from historical witnesses who watched irrevocable moments shape our world forever.
We hope you find these reflective reads informative, interesting, and insightful. In a world where we are always learning, growing and gaining perspective – these seniors spotlights share the wisdom of those who have truly ‘been there & done that.’

Learn from the Mistakes I Made as a Snowbirder | NEXT AVENUE
This new article published just two weeks ago comes from the Travel and Adventures section of a well-known website featuring news pertaining to older Americans. Two hopeful snowbirds share how excited they were to leave a freezing winter for some Florida sun, and what unexpected obstacles they encountered along the way.

A 73-Year-Old Knew She Was Being Scammed |THE WASHINGTON POST
There is near nothing we despise more than older adults being taken advantage of, but since the holidays are one of the biggest times that seniors are targeted – we cannot neglect this topic. This article written in winter of last year denotes the story of a woman who not only knew she was being scammed – but went so far as to set-up the criminal and have him arrested. We do NOT advise you do that at all – but we do think this article shares several examples of common senior set-ups that have only worsened since the pandemic.
Snippet: “There are several types of schemes, many of which involve people posing as technology support, the IRS or a charitable organization. The scammers exploit the vulnerable senior population because they often have financial savings and are ‘trusting and polite,’ the FBI says.”

Stories From People Who Became Witnesses to History | AARP
The assassination of JKF. The falling of the Berlin Wall. The birth of the Ford Mustang. These are historical events that many of us lived through – and millions more only heard about. These stories of real-life individuals who witnessed historical happenings are timeless reminders that one moment can shape a lifetime and a history book. Living long enough to see that happen is a gift we often take for granted.
Snippet: “From the assassination of John F. Kennedy to the death of a princess, these ordinary people lived through extraordinary events.”
