Senior Spotlight: Coping With Cold Weather

Resources for feeling your best when temperatures drop!

Are you feeling the chill in the air? Even though we are in California, and we enjoy the benefits of a warm climate, we are still in our chilliest time of year! With overnight temperatures often in the 40s, and daytime temps in the 60s, you may notice that certain aspects of your health and comfort are impacted.

This week, we wanted to share some resources that validate how the cold really does impact our health as we age, and what we can do about it!

AARP | 5 Conditions that Cold Weather Makes Worse and How to Cope

Did you know that the following health conditions are all impacted by the cold: 1) Dry eye disease; 2) Asthma; 3) Raynaud’s disease; 4) Eczema and 5) Arthritis. Learn more about why and what to do here.

National Institute On Aging | Cold Weather Safety for Older Adults

The NIH discusses how older adults have a higher chance of being impacted by cold weather. They cite how diabetes, thyroid problems, Parkinson’s disease, arthritis and even memory challenges make it harder to stay warm. Read about preventing unsafe exposure and staying warm indoors here.

Today’s Caregiver Magazine | Why are Seniors Always So Cold?

This article provides helpful explanations of what factors contribute to sensitivity in older age (such as low blood pressure, poor metabolic rate, loss of elasticity in blood vessels and so much more!) plus which medical conditions contribute to being cold and what signs of cold sensitivity to watch out for. This is a great read for seniors and those who support them!

While there are countless other resources that discuss coping with the cold as we age, the best advice will come from your own medical team and trusted providers.

Too often with aging, we accept that discomfort is just a part of aging. However, if you feel you cannot keep warm, are noticing an increased sensitivity to lower temperatures or have any questions at all – please make an appointment with your doctor. You deserve to feel your best – in all seasons!

Warm regards (pun intended!),
