Senior Spotlight: Conservation Vacations For Animal Lovers

Travel with a purpose!

Vacations usually involve relaxation in a new destination, often interspersed with some elements of arts, culture & outdoor adventures. But did you know there is a whole segment of travel called ‘conservacation’ in which you can see the world AND make a difference along the way?! Just two weeks ago, Next Avenue published an article titled ‘Love Animals? Consider a Vacation with Them.’ The piece showcased ‘do-good’ alternatives to beach bathing or lake trips… and the suggestions are spectacular!

The idea of a ‘conservacation’ is ideal for retirees and older adults who want to travel and also volunteer. There are many organizations that allow individuals to work hands-on with scientific researchers and wildlife conservation groups to support non-profits, help feed and care for animals and document discoveries. These adventures can take place in the United States and around the world from Africa to Asia.

Example Expeditions

Earthwatch: This is perhaps the original citizen science and community engagement travel expedition center. Founded in 1971, Earthwatch offers over 40 field research expeditions around the world that require no prior experience. Opportunities include helping conserve wildlife within the Amazon Basin, helping threatened rhinos in South Africa, determining why Pacific leatherback sea turtles are disappearing from Costa Rica and so much more! Explore here

Pandas International: This Denver-based organization is dedicated to saving the Giant Panda from extinction. They offer information for you to connect with the Bifengxia, Dujiangyan and Gengda Panda Centers in China (you can even work in a panda kindergarten & nursery!). Learn more here

African Parks: This non-profit manages 22 national parks and reserves in 12 countries. By visiting the parks, you can support conservation and the local communities today, while helping preserve the long-term future of these regions and the wildlife within them. You may be able to help set-up camera traps to observe animal behavior, help village children pick up trash and visit gorillas! Read all about the options here.

If you’d like to take a conservacation but maybe not go it alone – consider taking a teen grandchild or booking a multigenerational family trip.

If paying to work with wildlife is not in your budget, consider reaching out to your local ASPCA, city animal shelter or a local rescue group. There are always ways to help make a difference – whether you travel around the world or drive a mile or two. Thank you for considering how you can help and add meaning to your own life and those whom you work with.

Happy tails & trails,
