Monday Market Update: Barndominiums 101

There are many things that make a house a home – and a barn a home too!

Happy Thanksgiving Week! This is the time of year when we begin to sigh a breath of relief and reflect on where the year has been and where the next year is headed. While our last few blogs have focused heavily on market information and inventory data to empower our readers with knowledge – this week’s topic is both informative AND fun!

The word of the week for our Monday Market Update is… BARNDOMINIUM. Most of us think of the holidays as a time for down home comfort and gathering. But did you know that new type of home is growing in popularity for its own sense of ‘back to your roots’, rough elegance and warm tones.

Realtor.com® defines a ‘barndominium’ as a barn that’s been converted into a living space. While the term was originally coined by famed developer Karl Nilsen more than 20 years ago, the barndominium trend picked up speed after a famed renovation by Chip & Joanna Gaines on their “Fixer Upper” program.

Below we have compiled a few fabulous & factual reads from NAR® on what it takes to make a barn a home, how much they cost and how many are emerging in varying locales.

In summary, this unique property type can be budget-friendly or a budget buster – depending on countless factors starting with none other than building codes and permits. The insides of barndominiums offers as much diversity as the price range, and may reflect not just farmhouse style, but also modern farmhouse, industrial or classic country inspired. With Realtor.com® asserting that the craze shows no signs of slowing down, inventory ranges; Tennessee has more than 100 for sale, while barndominium listings in Georgia and Florida are in the hundreds!

According to LoopNet, California has 42 for sale including some nearby in Santa Rosa, Castro Valley, Napa and San Martin.

Could you ever see yourself living in a barn… maybe a stylish, converted one? Would you want a great mountain view, an endless sea of land, a manageable ranchette?

No matter what home looks & feels like to you (barn or no barn involved!), we hope you experience it this week with much joy & gratitude.

Grateful for you,
